This short story illustrates that there is one who is steadfast, trustworthy, and will not be shaken.

The coast off of Cornwall England has seen many shipwrecks over the centuries. One night, many years ago a ship was beaten by the fierce Atlantic waves until it broke up. All were lost except a young Irish boy, Emmet. He floundered on the waves until in the dark he was slammed against a jagged rock. He clutched the rock and held on throughout the long night as the storm waves pounded against him over and over,

The sun came up as the storm spent itself out leaving a clear blue sky. Coastal townsfolk searched the beaches and shore for any survivors but found none until someone looked across the waters with a captain's telescope. Through the lens, they saw Emmit's limp form on the distant waters still clutching to the rugged rock.

Quickly a rescue boat was launched, and the men leaned their backs against the oars to reach him. Emmet was almost dead from the storm and the icy seas. The rescuers carefully brought him onto the boat and took him to the shore.

After a few hours, Emmet had been warmed up and given hot food. His recovery from the ordeal was quick and complete.

Someone asked him, "Son, didn't you tremble out there on that rock in all that storm?"

Emmet replied in classic Irish manner, "Tremble? Aye, I did tremble, but do you know the rock never trembled once all night long?"

Christ is like that rock If you have trust in him you will find that he is firm and secure, no matter what storms may enter your life.
Though they were very moral and had high social standing they were unbelievers in the Christian faith. Their names were Gilbert West, a famous English jurist and Lord Littleton, a great thinker and author who shaped the literary world of his day. The men agreed to destroy the foolishness of Christianity.

They observed that two things would have to happen to accomplish this; one, they must prove that the resurrection of Jesus never happened, and was not a fact. The other thing they felt must be explained away was the conversion of Saul of Tarsis who became the Apostle Paul.

Mr. West took on the task of "Getting rid" of the resurrection using the approach of a court of law, while Mr. Littleton took on the task of debunking of the conversion of Saul on the Damascus Road with logic and clarity of thought.

They each went their separate ways and set about the task. They agreed to meet together on a certain date to merge their two projects into one work that would put an end to Christianity. The day came a year later and the two men sat down to compare notes. They had each taken the time to work on their arguments from both legal and logical disciplines.

When they met, they each had become converted and committed Christians, each confessed he had been convinced by the results applying his intellect to the task. The resurrection had endured the lawyer's scrutiny and stood the test of hostile research. Saul's conversion could not be explained away by the brilliant mind of Lord Littleton.

This short story reminds us that it is important to come to God while we are able. Tomorrow may be eternally too late!

Many years ago, an American preacher held a revival-type meeting in a mining town in England. Clyde, a big muscled coal miner, was deeply burdened over his ways of drunkenness, gambling, and brawling. As the meeting closed, he walked up to the preacher. "Reverend, I know I am a sinner and am afraid of God's mighty hand of judgment. How can I find peace with God and peace with myself?"

The preacher opened before him the scriptures and showed him the way of salvation. He patiently explained that Christ came into the world, seeking to save that which is lost. He explained how Christ gave his life as a ransom for us. He explained that Christ's death on the cross paid for the sin of the world; and how all we need to do to be saved is to come to him, believing in Christ's finished work on the cross.

Clyde was so burdened with his sins that he could not see the light. As the hours passed, the preacher urged him to turn from self and, "Behold the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world."

Clyde did not find peace. When the clock struck eleven, the preacher suggested that Clyde go home and return the following evening and then make peace with God.

Clyde replied, "No, I will not leave! It must be settled tonight or never!"

They stayed together, talking and praying as the hours passed. As the clock struck three, the light of the glorious gospel was shown upon the miner. He understood and believed the glorious fact that the work of Christ on the cross took away his sin and brought him peace and joy. Standing, Clyde shouted, "It's all settled now! The Lord Jesus Christ is mine!" With tears in his eyes, he thanked the minister who had been so patient with him.

A few hours later, Clyde went to his work in the mine, happy and rejoicing because he was a saved man. The day's work had barely begun when the rumble of crashing stone was heard. The roof of the mine had caved in. Many men were buried beneath it.

The alarm blew, and hundreds of townsfolk ceased their work and joined the rescue efforts to save the trapped miners. They dug out the earth, stone, and debris throughout the day to rescue the buried men. After a fearful time, they reached Clyde; He was barely alive, and in the torchlight, it was clear he would soon be gone. Clyde's lips moved, and the men leaned close to hear his last words as life ebbed from him.

"Thank God, it was settled last night."

Young Louis was considering becoming a Christian, but as he weighed the cost of following Christ he feared that he would have to give up the sinful habits and pleasures he had enjoyed for a lifetime.

"Charlie," he said to his friend. "There are so many things that I enjoy which I know are bad. I know that I will have to turn away from them if I become a Christian. I like to party. I like to gamble. I like to waste my time at the mall and go to the movies. I like to go out and have a good time!"

Charlie said, "But think about it. there are already many things that you can't do now; like you can't eat mud."

"Sure, well no. I could if I wanted to," said Louis. "But I don't want to eat mud. I know it is bad for me."

"That's just it." Said Charlie, "When you become a real Christian, you will love the Lord with all your heart, you will not like sin. You will no longer want the sinful things of the world."
The Rich Bootlegger and the Needle is a story about the conversion of a man who found God when he was put in prison, there is an ironic turn of words at the end that makes the story stick.

In the early days of the twentieth century in the United States, there were laws banning the manufacture and sale of alcohol. Mr. Conway was already a wealthy man but he took up the business of bootlegging, he sold liquor through false businesses. He was trying to increase his wealth and was succeeding in building a small empire of manufacture and distribution of liquor to illegal nightclubs and bars.

Of course, he was caught by the police and was arrested. He was put on trial and found guilty of breaking the law. He ended up in a prison where the prisoners worked at hard labor long hours every day.

One day an old and true friend came to the prison to visit him so he may encourage him. The friend was allowed inside the prison walls and was told he would find Mr. Conway in the work yard. The friend found him sitting in the hot sun on a wooden bench at a rough work table. Mr. Conway was working with a big needle and ball of hemp twine, with dry cracked fingers he pushed the needle through heavy burlap cloth and drew the course twine through to sew burlap bags.

"Well, I see you are sewing," the friend remarked.

Looking up Mr. Conway replied, "No, I am reaping."

He was right for he was reaping what he had sown.

The Bible says, "Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows." Galatians 6:7.

The Angel's Caldron. a parable of the future.

The old wise pilgrim woman was fond of saying that the Good Lord gives the gift of salvation to whomever He will, but it is we who will determine our rewards; she would tell this story to illustrate her point.

Mr. Elliott died and went to stand before the Eternal Judge of all men's souls. He was led by the angels to a chamber where many were waiting to receive the rewards for acts done in their earthly lives. The huge chamber was filled with all kinds of noise. The noise was coming from the front of the crowd. Going forward, he was able to see what the noise was. It seemed that each person was to stand before a large silver cauldron which hung over a white-hot blazing fire; as the man or woman stood before the cauldron, an angel would call from the four winds all the words the person ever said in their earthly lives.

Mr. Elliott watched as a person ahead stood in front of the cauldron. The Angel called for the words of his life to come and fill the shiny kettle. The air was filled with mutterings and whisperings and sounds as his words filled the cauldron. The fire blazed whiter than fire ever could, and the words frothed and foamed in the pot until they became a gray sludge. The sludge bubbled down until the bottom of the kettle was the essence of all the man said.

The Angel tipped the cauldron over and spilled out the sum of his lifetime of words. The gray sludge splattered onto the ground, and the word "me" stood up to shout over and over "me, me, me," The slimy word became hundreds and thousands. They covered the man and pulled him down a gutter to disappear into a dark drain leading to the lower places of eternity.

The next man stood before the cauldron, and the Angel called forth all the words he spoke in his lifetime. The words rushed from far places and filled the chamber with sighs. They sizzled and frothed in the kettle until they were boiled down to the one word that was the heart and core of all the words he ever spoke. The Angel tipped the huge pot over, and the black sludge poured out onto the ground, and the word "Mine" declared itself. The word repeatedly shouted, "Mine, mine, mine!" soon, thousands of words clung to the man. They forced him down the gutter into the drain.

Next, a woman came to stand before the kettle, and her words were called from the four winds. They came with roaring and filled the cauldron. The boiled sludge was reduced to the truest essential of all she ever said in her life. The Angel tipped over the kettle, and black sludge poured onto the ground. The word that summed up all she ever said was "Hate. hate, Hate." The word Hate became thousands and clung to her and dragged her away to the lower rewards against her will.

A small and frail-looking man stood weakly before the kettle. All the words he spoke in his life were called from the four winds. As they came from distant places, they brought music with them. The cauldron barely received the words before they began to send up clouds. The clouds seemed to sing over and over the words of his life. The words said, "Kindness, grace, love, and forgiveness." The angels bowed as the words lifted him upwards to the place of blessing and rewards.

Sometimes we make the simplicity of the Gospel too complicated. Here is a story of how one man simply explained God's forgiveness to his old boss.

__________________

Blake had been concerned for his old boss who had retired. Mr. Crawford was burdened with the guilt of many wrongdoings and was anxious for God's forgiveness; so Blake paid Mr. Crawford a visit and the conversation quickly turned to the subject of the fear of facing God after living a life of regrets.

"Look," Blake said, "Suppose I go to a shop and buy something for you. I pay for it and tell you to go to the store pick up desk to get it. Are you going to take money with you to pay for it?"

"No," said the old man, "You already paid for it."

"Well, do you need to make any promise to pay for it later on?"

"No, it would be mine for free."

Then Blake said, "It is the same way with forgiveness of sins. The Lord Jesus already paid the full price for it. He took all the pain and punishment that sin deserved. He paid the whole thing. So all you have to do is take the forgiveness he already paid for."

"Oh," said the old man with tears in his eyes. "I see it now. This is forgiveness that cost nothing from me. Christ has bought it and he gives it to me!"

Many years ago when the cities were in a building boom to make the tallest buildings Adele Maywood was concerned about her husband's soul. John was a steeplejack who worked on scaffolds hundreds of feet above the streets to build the tall buildings, but as a tough hardworking man he had no regard for religion.

Adele asked the minister of her church to come see John and tell him about the Gospel of Jesus, but whenever the pastor came to see John he was at work. "I would dearly love to share Christ with John," he told Adele, "But how can I when he is never home?"

The next day the phone rang in the pastor's office. "This is Adele Maywood, Pastor. My husband says if you want to speak to him he is working on the steeple of Christ Memorial Presbyterian Church on Second Street. You can meet him there and speak to him."

The minister dropped everything and took the bus to Second Street. The building was being constructed and the street was a confusion of trucks, laborers, and equipment. "I've come to speak to John Maywood." He told the foreman.

"Oh, Maywood is on the top." The foreman said as he looked up to the roof far feet above. "If you can wait I'll send someone up to bring him down."

"No, I'll go to him." Then the minister climbed ladder after ladder until he was two hundred feet above the sidewalk. There on the roof, the minister spoke to John about eternity and his soul. In a few minutes, John was brought to the Savior.

The next Sunday John stood next to his wife in church and publicly declared Jesus as his Lord and Savior. When people asked him about his decision to trust Jesus he said, "The preacher who climbs two hundred feet of ladders to speak to me can get me every time!"

Roy Hernandez had been a robber and kidnapper for most of his adult life. He was caught, tried, and sentenced to twelve years at hard labor in federal prison.

In the prison, he heard the gospel that God offers forgiveness through Jesus, and Roy trusted Jesus as Savior.

After serving his time and Roy was released from prison. Just before he went out another prisoner handed him a letter.

The letter said, "You know when I came into this prison I despised preachers, the Bible, and everything. I went to Bible Class and the preaching services because there was nothing else to do on Sunday.

I saw you there telling me how you were saved. I said, 'That's another guy taking the gospel road to try to get a parole.' For two and a half years, Roy, I have watched you. You did not know it, but I watched you when you were in the yard exercising when you were working in the shop when you played ball when you were in the dining hall when you were on the way to your cell. Now I am a Christian too, because I watched you, and saw that you never slipped, so I knew Jesus was real. The Savior who saved you has saved me."

When Roy had finished reading the letter a cold sweat came out on him. He thought, "Suppose I had slipped, even once, then that man would not have been saved."

Roy's story would never happen if he had not come to Christ. If you are interested in knowing how Jesus can change your life see my other post.

This is an illustration of the value of searching the Bible for the riches of its teachings. Too often, we just glance at its pages and read a chapter in haste, but there are treasures if we take time and effort to mine them.

THE POOR MINERS AND THE MOUNTAIN RICHES

A man named Earnest and his wife, Elise heard of a gold rush in a remote mountain and sold everything they owned to buy it. They spent the rest of their days digging in the mud of the mountain creek for gold. Panning for gold was hard, backbreaking work. They stood in the freezing water while scraping in the mud with a pan and washing out the fine grains of gold. They were often cold and hungry and had nothing but a shack by the creek.

Longing for the great wealth, they stayed at the creek for years, scraping a humble living out of the mud. Eventually, their lives were spent, and in their old age, they sold their little claim to a corporation and went to live with friends.

The claim was unexplored until the corporation sent an engineer to survey it. It only took him minutes to realize that the mountain face next to the creek had a massive vein of gold.

The old couple never realized that only yards from their shack was one of the wealthiest veins of gold in the state, worth many millions. If they had only taken the time to explore the area, they would have been rich beyond their dreams since the vein of gold was within the boundaries of their claim- but they never ventured more than a few steps from their shack to the creek.

God's Word is like the mountain gold, but we have to apply some effort to find it and mine it. We cannot just give it a casual read or a passing glance at its pages then expect to receive its treasures.

This is an illustration of the faith of a child who struggled with temptation and how after coming to Jesus she found practical victory over folly by a daily expression faith.
LET JESUS ANSWER THE DOOR

Little Alexei was a handful; the child was always getting into mischief and trouble. Family and friends would sadly shake their heads at her latest transgressions and follies, then with a sigh say, "That child is sure to come to ruin early in life."

Then the parent of a playmate that was often brought to tears by Alexei took an interest in her. Mrs. Morgan invited Alexei to come to church and go to Sunday School. Alexei was immediately brought under the conviction of God's Holy Spirit; and when she heard the Gospel taught week after week she soon trusted Jesus as her Savior.

A great change came into her life. She was full of the same energy and vivacious as ever, but instead of going from trouble to mischief she was serving and helping others. She developed a kind and thoughtful personality.

One day a neighbor asked her. "Alexei, what happened to you? How did you change so much? I know you received Jesus, but doesn't the devil come to you with temptations to get into trouble?"

"Yes, he does! All the time!" Alexei replied. "The devil comes knocking on my heart every day. He comes knocking with temptations just like before. But I used to go and answer the door and I always followed him into trouble. Now when the devil comes knocking I let Jesus answer the door for me. And when the devil sees him he runs right away."
AWAITING THE FINAL WORD

A STORY TO HELP ILLUSTRATE THE RESURRECTION

Many years ago the great general Wellington faced Napoleon and his army. It would be a battle to end the series of wars and bring peace to Europe.

This was before the telegraph, telephone, internet, or nightly news. The outcome of the battle of Waterloo would take days to reach the capitals of Europe. London, in particular, was anxious to learn the fate of Europe. The news was brought by sailing vessel to the south coast of England, and then flags would be raised to spell out the message. The semaphore towers all across the land relayed the news by raising flags.

On top of Westminster Cathedral, the tallest building in London, lookouts watched the distant flag towers spell out the messages. The first word was "Wellington." They waited for the next word. "Defeated."

On the horizon, a bank of fog rolled in from the coast covering the last part of the message. The city was in turmoil and fear. It was clear that the message was that Wellington was defeated, that Napoleon was unstoppable and England would fall.

After a time the fog lifted and the entire message was visible to all, "Wellington defeated the enemy." The city and all of the land was filled with joyful celebration.

When Jesus was put in the tomb all his disciples and those who loved him were in despair and sorrow. It appeared that the enemy had defeated their king that sin and death had conquered, but on the morning of the third day, the darkness was lifted. The good news that Jesus had risen from the grave spread and filled his disciples with joy and gladness. The message was that Jesus defeated sin and death.

THE ZOOKEEPER AND THE NOT SO DEAD TIGER

In the city was a famous zoo. One of the greatest attractions was the Big Cats House where lions, tigers, panthers, and other large "cats" were kept. Around the building were the big cat's exhibits; these were large enclosures that had a deep wide channel, to separate the animals from the people who wanted to see them. The channel was too deep for the cats to climb and too wide for them to jump over. People could enjoy seeing the animals without cage bars and the animals had a lot of room to roam and be happy.

One day a new tiger named Princess Sheba was brought to the zoo. Everybody hoped the new tiger would get along with the one they already had, named Kahn. The people watched as the two met for the first time, but were horrified when the two tigers began to fight. No one ever saw tigers fight before and it was a dreadful thing to see. The battle was fierce! The snarling was louder than anyone imagined. The Tigers thrashed and tumbled over each other in a blur. They ripped at each other with huge bloody claws and tore into each other with terrible fangs. Even though it was a horrible fight it ended soon and Kahn was dead. His body fell into the channel.

Randy Wilson was the zookeeper whose job was to take care of the lions and tigers. His heart broke that the beautiful rare tiger was dead.

After Princess Sheba was chased back into her den Randy went down into the channel enclosure with ropes and tackle to lift out the dead tiger. It would take a crane since this adult tiger weighed about six hundred pounds. Randy set the ropes and tackle down next to the tiger that he loved so much. In sadness, he leaned over and put his hand on Kahn's bloody shoulder.

The moment he touched the tiger it growled and got up on its feet! Kahn's head was low and threatening, he curled back his lips and showed huge teeth stained with blood.

Randy was facing a wild tiger, one that was injured and angry. It is said that there is no creature as dangerous as one that is injured. Randy was sure the tiger would spring on him and kill him. They were in the channel and there was no place to run or hide. A single swipe of the tiger's claws would rip him open.

Kahn turned. Instead of attacking Randy the tiger slowly walked back to his den and lay down.

Kahn gave grace to the Zookeeper.

SAVED BY A SONG, THE TRUE STORY OF THE SOLDIER WHO SANG ON GUARD DUTY

Ira Sankey had a beautiful voice and was the most renowned singer of Gospel songs in his generation. As a singer, he accompanied D.L. Moody on his preaching tours, revivals and crusades for the Gospel.

One Christmas Eve Mr. Sankey was on a steamboat going up an east coast river. When it was known that the famous singer was on board many entreated him to sing. They gathered in the open on the deck and Mr. Snakey prayed to the Lord to show him which song to sing. Then looking to heaven he sang

"Savior, like a shepherd, lead us. Much we need Thy tender care!"

Everyone was moved by his song of devotion as it rolled over the deck and was carried over the waters.

When he was finished, the crowd returned below to the warmth of cabins but one man remained behind. Coming up to the singer he asked. "Did you ever serve in the Union Army during the war between the states?"

"Yes," replied Mr. Sankey.

"Did you do guard duty at night, on the one bright moonlight night in 1862?" The man continued.

"Yes." Answered Mr. Sankey.

"Well," the stranger said. "I served in the Confederate army. I also was out on that same night. I saw you while I hid in the shadows and raised my gun and took aim at you. You were standing alone in the bright moonlight. I was about to pull the trigger but you looked up to heaven and began to sing:

'Savior, like a Shepherd, lead us, much we need Thy tender care!'"

When I heard that song I couldn't shoot you!"
THE LITTLE GIRL WHO WANTED TO SEE JESUS

Emily and her mother, Mrs. Cook, were visiting a friend who had a large modern house in the city. Emily was excited to explore the huge house with its many rooms and wonderful furnishings.

One of the treasures she discovered was a beautiful picture of Jesus as the Good Shepherd; it was mounted on the wall over the headboard of the bed where she was to sleep. She didn't notice it until she lay in the bed and put her head on the pillow, then she saw it across the room reflected in the dressing table mirror.

With a gasp, she cried, "Look, mommy, I see Jesus in the mirror." Emily crawled out from under the blankets and struggled to see the picture until she was on her knees atop the mattress. When she tried to see the picture in the mirror she only saw her own reflection there and not the Good Shepherd.

She lay down on her back and then she saw Jesus. "There he is!" She sat up once more climbing back to her knees. "What? Oh, he is gone again."

At last, Emily lay down frustrated. "Oh Mommy, when I can't see myself then I can see Jesus, but when all I see is myself then I can't see Jesus.

It is so true that we can't see Jesus when our vision is filled with Self.

There were two college students hiking along a trail in the mountains; they were talking about Isabelle, a third friend, who had a bright personality.

What do you think is the cause of her positive outlook and happy personality?" Cora asked.

"I know," said Flo. Then she pointed across the valley to an old castle. "See that beautiful castle? When I was a kid my friends and I would sit up here and look at it. We could tell what was happening by how many lights were burning. If only the family was home then just few lights were lit. If there was a ball then many lights were lit, and the palace was beautiful. Once a royal prince came from another country and the whole palace was all lit up like fireworks.

"What do you mean?" Cora asked.

"It is just like that with Isabelle. The reason she has a bright personality is that she has The King of Kings, the Lord Jesus, staying with her. So her light is always bright."

When Jesus comes into your life he fills you with brightness and hope. He said, "You are the light of the world a city on a hill cannot be hidden." Matthew 5:14.

THE GOSPEL OF THE OLD COUPLE WHO WHO TOOK THE LANDLORD AT HIS WORD

Sean Mac Quaid was a rich landlord who had a huge estate. It could truly be said that as he looked out from his manor house that he was Lord of all he saw. Across the county meadows to the distant rolling hills were farms that he owned and villages that owed him their living and paid him rent.

Sean became a believer in Jesus Christ and was devoted to preaching the Gospel in his own personal way. He would speak of the salvation he found in Christ to anyone who he met. He often found creative and practical ways to illustrate the gospel.

One day he placed an advert in the local paper saying that on a particular day he would be in his office from ten o'clock in the morning until the stroke of noon and that during those two hours he would pay off all the debts of anyone who brought him their mortgages and bills of debt.

The entire county was abuzz over the notice, and it was talked about in the pubs, the markets, and on every street. Some declared it was a joke, and others put forth that it was some trick, and that Mr. Mac Quaid was going to turn the misfortune of others to his advantage. A few in the town pub decided that he had gone mad and this offer would come to nothing.

On the appointed day many people took the lane to the landlord's town office carrying their bills of debt and unpaid mortgages in their hands. They gathered on the cobbled drive in front of the big double doors. Exactly at ten Mr. Mac Quaid and his assistant arrived chauffeured in the black sedan. They said not a word of greeting to any as they mounted the steps and entered the office.

The crowd began to discuss this strange behavior and what it might mean. Doubts filled the crowd. Is the offer valid? Did Mr. Mac Quaid truly mean what the article said? No one had the courage to enter the door and find out for fear that they may be made a fool of or find themselves in some bad way with the rich landlord.

"Mike, why don't you go in and have your daughter's doctor's bills paid."

"No. You go in first you have a bigger bill than I do, and if he is good on his word you come and tell us so we will know to go in too."

"No, let someone with more debt be first."

"I don't want to be first. What if it is some mischief? I can't afford more bad luck."

The time passed as they discussed and argued among themselves.

It was nearly twelve o'clock when an aged couple who lived on the edge of the county slowly hobbled up the lane. The old man had in his shaking hand a wad of bills and debts. "Is it true? Is Mr. Mac Quaid really paying off the debts of any who come to him?"

"Well, he hasn't paid off any yet." A grouchy voice from the crowd called.

"We all are sure it is a cruel jest at our expense." A woman said.

The old couple sniffed and whipped tears. "Oh, it is all a mistake then. We hoped he was a good man and that his word was good. We had hoped to die free of debt." With slumped shoulders, they turned sadly away from the crowd and the office of the landlord.

"Wait! Don't leave." Someone called after them. "No one has tried him yet. Suppose you go on in and try him. If he pays off your bills then come out and tell the rest of us so we will know to go in too."

The old couple decided to give it a try. Fearfully they approached the office and climbed the steps. They were barely able to open the massive door. Inside seemed dark after the noonday sun.

"Welcome. Please come on in." The assistant greeted them warmly. "Have a seat here at my desk and show me your bills."

With frail hands, he passed the papers across the desk where the landlord was sitting. "Is this all?" Mr. Mac Quaid asked, "Nothing overlooked or forgotten?"

"Yes sir, that is everything," she whispered.

Without further comment, the assistant opened the drawer of the desk and pulled out the big checkbook. A moment later the check was written for the entire amount and signed by Mr. Mac Quaid.

The old couple began to get up but the assistant said, "I'm sorry you must remain here until twelve noon."

"But sir, we have to go out and tell the others what a kind thing you have done; so they will know to come in too."

Sean Mac Quaid leaned forward on his desk and folded his hands. "No, you are not to tell them. You took me at my word, now your debts are paid. If the others had believed me, and taken me at my word then their debts would be paid too."

The crowd outside watched and waited, wondering at the delay. Their eyes were fixed on the closed doors. The minutes passed slowly by yet they all remained outside.

The clock in the town church began to chime twelve as the door opened. The old man and his wife came out. "What happened? Did the landlord keep his word?" They asked.

"Bless him." They said with tears of joy, "Here is the check, our debts are all paid off."

"Why didn't you come out and tell us?"

"He said that you had to come as we did and take him at his word."

As the clock struck the twelfth stroke the door opened. The landlord came down the steps to his car. The desperate people crowded around him. They held out their bills for him to see. "Wait! Don't go. Won't you pay our debts just like you did for the old couple?"

The landlord said, "It is too late now. I gave you the opportunity. I gave the invitation, but you did not believe me. If you had believed me I would have paid off every debt for you."

Then Mr. Mac Quaid explained to the crowd how God has an offer of payment for all debts of sins for those who will come to him, but that we must take God at His word and come.

"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only son that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life." John 3:16.

A minister traveled by train to Scotland for a holiday. He was acquainted with a sheepherder named Ned who offered to let him stay in the extra room in his cottage. When the minister's train arrived at the station the sheepherder was already standing there to meet him.

Ned had a horse and wagon in which and they traveled several hours to the ranch. He did not offer any conversation and seemed to have something on his mind. The minister finally broke the uncomfortable silence and asked him what was bothering him.

The old shepherd began to wipe tears from his face. "Last night I lost forty-six of my best lambs. The wolves got into the sheep pen."

"I'm sorry to hear that, Ned, very sorry. It is a terrible loss.

Ned sighed and his slumped shoulders heaved. "The poor wee things!"

"I hope not too many sheep were killed besides the lambs."

The shepherd looked at him with unbelief. "No. Reverend, don't you know that a wolf will never take a sheep when he can get a lamb?"

As they rolled along the minister thought the wolves were very much like the devil- he preys on the young and innocent who are without guile.

We must watch over and protect those little ones who Jesus loves.

"Come with me Allen," He invited the friend's young son to join him. "Let's explore this morning and see if we can find some adventure."

"Sure, Uncle Jessie." The six-year-old said.

They walked up the quiet lane and began to wander roads that led to the nearby farmland.

"This is a beautiful pathway; I wonder what is up here," Jessie said as he began to walk up a path lined with flowers and visited by butterflies.

Little Allen lingered behind.

"What's the matter, Allen? Why don't you want to go this way?"

Allen shook his head. "It is a bad way."

'What do you mean? Just look at all the buttercups and clover. See the butterflies! This is just what I wanted when I came here from the city. I'll just go a little way."

Jessie bent under the tree boughs and followed the path alone. He disappeared around a turn. In a short time, he came back covered in putrid mud and foulness.

"I tried to tell you, Uncle Jessie. That path was made by pigs. It looks nice here but in just a little way it is the stinkiest mess of mud and weeds that you ever saw.

MORAL
The path we take may look beautiful and bright but we need to know where it will lead. God has given us a guide in his Word the Bible, if we do not head it we too may find ourselves full of regrets.
When Snow Flower was twelve years old she was a student in a mission school in China where she learned to love the Gospel and Jesus. She was happy there, she learned she was important to God who loved her and that to Him she was not a lower class but a treasure worth dying for on the cross.

One day, her parents came. "We cannot pay any more." They said. "We have no money. You have to go to work and earn your living." They told her that she had to go to a home in a city thirty miles away to work as a servant girl.

Snow Flower came to the room of Dr. Richardson, the missionary, to say goodbye.

"I will be the only Christian in that whole city." she wept.

"Yes, you will, but you know who is going with you, don't you."

"Oh, Yes!" Snow Flower said joyfully, as a smile spread across her face. "The Lord Jesus will be with me."

In the distant city, Snow Flower continued to follow the Lord. She spoke openly about Jesus. The family she served would worship idols, but she refused and would not offer incense to the gods of the house. She suffered for the Lord and was mistreated, but she accepted it with joy. She continued to show kindness, forgiveness and smiled brightly as she did the hard housekeeping duties.

A few months after Snow Flower left for the city two men came to the mission school walking the thirty miles to get there. "We have come to speak to the schoolmaster." They said. "We have been sent to ask for someone to come back with us and teach us about Jesus. We want you to start a school."

Over the past years different missionaries tried to start working in that city but always had been asked to leave. Dr. Richardson asked, "Why now. What has changed? The men of your city asked us to leave before."

"A girl has come to a home in our city. She says that she is a Christian. A city official lives in that home and many visit it, whenever someone visits they see her happy face, and her kind, gentle manner. When she is asked why she is happy she says, "It is because I love Jesus, and Jesus loves me and is always with me."

Then they said to Dr. Robertson, "We want the other girls in our city to be like that Christian girl. Please come to our city, tell us all about this Jesus, and build a Jesus school."

Dr. Robertson was amazed. A city in China became open to the Good News about Jesus because a twelve-year-old girl witnessed for Jesus with her lips and with her life.
The True Story of Finding Jesus in Prison

Long ago a man was in a Japanese prison for murder. His name was Miyamoto, He spent twenty-five years in the prison, and it turned him into an angry and bitter man.

One day he was sitting in his cell making plans to start trouble with some other prisoners. He was going to start a riot and during the riot, he hoped to be able to harm someone that he had a grudge against.

Above his head was a shelf and on the shelf were some books. As he sat planning to make trouble a book fell off of the shelf and hit him on the head. He picked it up. It was open to the words which said, "Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest."* The book was a New Testament. The Governor of the prefecture was a Christian and he arranged for New Testaments to be placed in the prison cells.

Miyamoto began to read the New Testament. He read about the beautiful life of Jesus, He read about how Jesus died to pay for our sins even the sin of murder. He read how Jesus could save sinners from the judgment of sin.

At last, Miyamoto cried out and confessed his need for a savior and he received the gift of salvation. He became a follower of Jesus. He began to live a changed life and was no longer the violent prisoner he was.

Soon he was set free from the prison. He returned to his own village to see his family once more, he felt ashamed of his crime, so he intended to visit and then go to a distant place where no one knew he was a murder. Everyone saw a big change in Miyamoto, and they wondered at his new life.

When Miyamoto announced he was leaving to go to a far village his family and the village folk begged him to stay. "You are a wonderful example for our young men and boys. Your life shows what Jesus can do. We want you to stay because we want this Jesus religion too."

Soon the people of the village sought the Lord Jesus too. They wanted to have the Savior just like Miyamoto.

THE GIRL WHO TAUGHT THE DYING HOW TO LIVE

Sari grew up in an orphanage in India. Despite her loneliness, she loved Christ and was a devoted Christian. Sari was wonderful and talented in many ways, so it was no surprise that a handsome young missionary adored her. She rejoiced that she was soon to be married.

One day Sari was cleaning in the kitchen and noticed some sores on her hand. She had seen such sores before, and her heart broke. It was soon confirmed that she had leprosy. All her dreams of marriage and future dried up; her youth and beauty would be eaten by the disease.

When Sari left for the leprosy asylum, she put on her beautiful white wedding dress so the orphans would remember her as hopeful and beautiful. Still, many wept when she and her brother walked across the courtyard and out the gates.

Arriving at the leprosy asylum, she was stunned at what she saw. The women there were dirty. Their faces were empty, sad, and hopeless. Dread filled her heart, and putting her arms around her brother, she sobbed, "Jareth. Am I going to be like them?"

The missionaries said, "Sari. We have heard you love Jesus. Can you love these women too? There is much they need."

A spark of hope lit her heart. She got a vision of what she could do for God in that awful place. She started a school for women and taught them to read and write. She was talented at music and taught the women how to sing, and even started a chorus. She was able to play the piano, so the missionaries got her a folding organ, and she brought music into the asylum.

The place began to change; the sad, sick women there found hope and meaning. The compound became clean. The women began to take care of themselves and fix up their hair and wash their clothes. Anna taught them how to live even though they were slowly dying.

After a few years, Sari's brother asked her about coming to the leprosy asylum. She said, "When I first came to this Asylum, I was hopeless. Now, I know that God has work for me to do for Him here. If I had not become a leper, I would have never found my work. Each day I thank Him for having sent me here and for the work He has given me to do."

Sari worked in the asylum for years as leprosy consumed her; though her body decayed and withered away, her face was bright with an inner glow. She never uttered a word of complaint. She always had a word of cheer for the sad and weary ones. Many were brought to the Lord because of her.
THE TRUE TALE OF THE PREACHER AND THE GUNMAN

In the Days of the American Wild West, a pioneer minister named Jeremiah Appleton went to the frontier to preach the Gospel. Unfortunately, his preaching made a deadly enemy of the leader of a gang of horse thieves. The bandit chief swore that he was going to "Get the Preacher and do him dead."

At that time there were many lumber camps in the west. It was dangerous work and men were often badly hurt. One afternoon, a man was hurt by a falling tree. Jeremiah was sent for to comfort the dying man and his friends with the gospel.

The lumber camp was on the far side of some rough land where the bandits ran freely, and where no sheriff or deputy would ever venture- especially not alone. The sun was setting as Jeremiah came there and was immediately filled with fear. He got off his horse and prayed to God to keep him safe from the bandits and asked God to care for him. Getting back on his horse he went ahead to the lumber camp even though it was dark by the time he got there.

The next day the leader of the horse thieves was shot. While he was dying in the jail he called for the preacher. The leader admitted that he was waiting for the preacher the night before in the badlands because he was going to kill him.

Then the leader asked, "Who were those men who rode with you?"

"No one," The preacher answered, "I was alone."

The leader of the bandits screamed, "No, you were not! There were two men with you, one on either side. I never in my life saw such dreadful horses as they rode on! Who were those men?"

Jeremiah Appleton knew then that God had answered his prayer and sent angels to protect him.

Long ago in the days of the Reformation, two men both named Martin came to faith in Jesus as Savior.

One was Martin of Basel. Though he trusted Jesus for salvation he succumbed to fear and was unable to make a public confession of Jesus as Lord and Savior. The best he could do was to write on a piece of parchment the words, "O most merciful Christ, I know that I can be saved only by the merit of Thy blood. Holy Jesus, I acknowledge Thy sufferings for me. I love thee. I love thee." Then he hid the parchment sealing it behind one of the stones in the wall of his home. Over a hundred years later it was discovered.

The other Martin was Martin Luther. He, too, found the Lord Jesus and accepted salvation by faith. He said, "My Lord had confessed me before men, He died for me, I will not shrink from confessing him, even before kings.!" Boldly and without fear, Martin Luther confessed Jesus publicly before men.

The name of Martin Luther is respected and honored today, centuries after his confession before men and kings. The name of Martin of Basel is unknown and forgotten.

We should all be glad to confess the Lord Jesus.

This is a dramatic illustration of the extreme attitude of devotion that other religions have which can put many Christians to shame by comparison.

She Gave Her Best For Her God

Many years ago an early medical missionary, Melba Atkinson, went to India to serve in a hospital mission. One day she saw a woman hurrying toward the Ganges River. The woman was carrying a sick moaning child in her arms, and Melba immediately recognized the dire illness. Walking beside the woman was a little child, a beautiful boy with large lovely eyes, and a bright smile: the young boy was strong and healthy.

The mother approached the bank of the river and Melba seeing the mother was in deep distress tried to help her. The woman said that she was going to make an offering to her god. The missionary told her about the Lord Jesus and how Jesus had died on the cross for her sins. She tried to persuade the woman to trust in Jesus. But the mother was firm. She would not believe in Jesus.

Just then some people came running up to Melba and told her she was needed at the hospital to give emergency medical treatment to some people who were seriously hurt.

After giving aid Melba hurried back to the river hoping to find the woman again. She was worried for the woman and her children and wanted to tell her more of the love of Jesus, and of his willingness to save her. Soon Melba spotted the woman in the crowded street at a distance. Running up to her Melba saw that she had the sickly child in her arms, but not the handsome boy who had walked by her side; then Melba knew that the woman had thrown the beautiful little boy into the river as her gift to her god!

With disbelief, Melba asked, "Why did you throw your boy in the river?"

"I needed to make an offering to my god. I hope that he will favor me for it!"

"But," asked the missionary, "Why did you choose as you did? Why didn't you give the dying child instead of the beautiful boy?"

Drawing herself up straight and proud the woman said, "I don't know about you Christians, but we give our gods our best."
